Beyond the Screen: FREE Events That Bring Salem Film Fest to Life
Free to Attend. Worth Showing Up For.
Salem Film Fest is known for powerful documentaries from around the world. But what makes the experience unforgettable happens just outside the theater.
Across four days, the festival opens its doors to a series of free public events where you can meet filmmakers, hear how stories are shaped, and experience documentary storytelling in a completely different way. No ticket required. Just curiosity.
See Films Before They’re Finished
Docs-In-Progress
Saturday, March 28, 2026 · 10:30 AM
Salem Access Television (SATV)
One of the most unique experiences of the weekend invites you inside the creative process itself.
Docs-In-Progress features three New England documentary projects still in development. These are not polished, final cuts. They are living, evolving works shaped over years of dedication. Each team presents a short excerpt, followed by live feedback from a panel of industry professionals.
You’ll hear firsthand how a woman rebuilding her life finds community on the road, how an Italian village turns to street art to survive, and how a filmmaker crafts an intimate tribute through memory and image.
It’s rare access to the decisions, risks, and questions that shape a film long before it reaches the public.

What is the role of documentary film in today’s world?
The Filmmaker Forum brings together voices from across this year’s festival for a thoughtful and timely conversation. Emerging and established filmmakers gather to explore the responsibility of storytelling, the challenges of today’s social and political climate, and what impact film can truly have.
This is not a passive experience. It’s a chance to sit in the room where these conversations are happening and to feel part of something larger than a single screening.

Free Social Events Throughout the Weekend
Beyond the screenings, Salem Film Fest creates space for something just as important. Connection.
Throughout the weekend, a series of informal gatherings invites you to meet filmmakers and fellow festival-goers in a relaxed, welcoming setting.
From the Opening Night celebration at Old Town Hall on Thursday evening, to happy hour at East Regiment Beer Co., to late-night gatherings along the waterfront and the closing wrap party, these moments are where conversations continue long after the credits roll.
You might find yourself talking with a director about a film they spent five years creating, or sharing reactions with someone who just experienced the same story as you.
This is where Salem Film Fest becomes something more than a festival. It becomes a community.
